KNOW YOUR FACTS: Rumor that Vitamin D is great to soak up in a Tanning Bed...says Dr. Oz

Vitamin D facts, that can affect you or your children; What types of tanning beds are good?

Some Tanning Salons are giddy over sharing this new Dr. OZ claims that Tanning Beds are Good. These statements are full of false truths.  Dr. Oz is obviously not reading the studies over the years....tisk tisk.

Spread balanced facts: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-204_162-57525113/study-tanning-beds-cause-170k-skin-cancer-cases-yearly/
October 2012 CBS reported: Indoor tanning is to blame for more than 170,000 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer in the United States each year, a new study finds.

Further, Dr. Oz also reported:  some objectivity surrounding safe Tanning
Beds for 15 min of exposure, interesting and fair.  I think you will like the President of Joint Canadian Tanning Association comments to Dr. Oz.

FROM:  Doug McNabb, Calgary, Alberta

Dr. Oz,

I am the President of the Joint Canadian Tanning Association and the owner of
Canada’s largest indoor chain of sunbeds, Fabutan.

Firstly, let me say that regardless of where you end up on this issue I
appreciate the objectivity with which you are approaching it. As you explore
this further, I hope that you will reach out to some medical/research
professionals that are fully aware of all the pro UV research that exists to
hear their positions as well.

I wish to respectfully point out something that struck me from your Blog post.
You stated that “ I recommend that you enjoy up to 15 minutes – at most – of
natural sunlight without sunscreen to get your vitamin D and other sun-derived
benefits.”.

I agree with this statement. However, are you aware that sunlight and sunbeds
are considered the same level of risk by the World Health Organization.  In fact, sunlight has been in this risk
category since 1992.

The benefits you mention from sunlight are available from sunbeds that emit
UV-B. In fact, in many Northern states and in Canada the zenith angle of the
sun inhibits its ability to provide adequate UV-B to produce vitamin D for 4-6
months a year.

Sunbeds are available all year. I support your message that one does not need
to tan in order to optimize their vitamin D levels.

During this same segment, I was intrigued by Dr. Mercola's claims on the therapeutic value of these specific UVB-emitting tanning beds (most tanning beds use only UVA rays, which can cause damage far below the surface of the skin). As a doctor, it is my natural inclination to evaluate and question emerging information in science and medicine – but please do not misconstrue this as me changing my stance on the dangers of indoor tanning.  My beliefs are firmly aligned with those of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD): Research shows that excessive ultraviolet radiation can lead to skin cancer. The bottom line is both UVA and UVB rays cause cancer.

And it’s not just sunburn we’re talking about – the use of tanning beds can cause damage to collagen and elastin fibers, dermal blood vessels and other structures. Tanning can cause blotchy skin discolorations.

While 10 minutes a day of sun exposure to skin of arms & legs is said to supply the body with enough Vitamin D, . When I was in Canada they said 1 out of 10 do not have proper Vit D and as such there is a lot of Depression, weightgain and other health problems.

I have long followed Dr. Mercola and found his information to be factual and a great resource of awareness.   http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/03/26/maximizing-vitamin-d-exposure.aspx

I found this fact to be really interesting as it was unknown to me:   After getting a tan, you should know that when UVB strikes the surface of your skin, your skin converts a cholesterol derivative into vitamin D3. It takes up to 48 hours for this vitamin D3 to be absorbed into your bloodstream to elevate your vitamin D levels. Therefore, it’s important to avoid washing your skin with soap after sun exposure.

Additionallly, there were many facts about Vitamin D that are important because children generally do not have their levels checked.  The say 40% of the population is deficient in Vitamin D, but those numbers do not include children.  Check here.  http://www.naturalnews.com/003069.html
