Monday Essentials: Back to School, A Route for Culpo?

Welcome to another week, Cranston. This week will be a busy one, and not just because the City Council is meeting Monday night.

School: It's back to school time! About ten thousand students will be heading back to school on Tuesday.

"Teachers are getting their classrooms ready, the floors and buildings are shiny and clean due to the diligence of our custodians and administrators are preparing schedules and events to kick off the new school year," said Superintendent Judith Lundsten.

Try to get the kids to have a good night sleep tonight and be sure to use the Patch to keep yourself and your community informed about the latest school happenings.

City Council: The City Council meets tonight. We'll be there to cover the play-by-play. There's a few interesting items on the docket but one thing caught our eye — Councilmen Don Botts and Michael Favicchio have introduced a resolution that would designate a local street "Olivia Culpo Way" after the former Miss USA and current Miss Universe.

Suspended: Speaking of school, the School Committee meets Wednesday for a closed-door meeting about a teacher who is apparently facing suspension. The agenda includes a resolution recommending the suspension of teacher "A" for the entire school year without pay and to be terminated next year.

The teacher is not identified because personnel issues are not public.

Library: Aside from today's Knit and Crochet Crafters meeting from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Auburn Library, the libraries are quiet this week as the school year starts. Note that the library will be closed Saturday through Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

Summer: The kids might be back to school but the weather will still be whispering summertime. The high temperature will range from 79 to 82 all week and there's a chance of thunderstorms nearly every day except Thursday. Lows will be higher at night than the past few nights and won't go below 65 degrees.
