Monday Essentials: City Council, Thanksgiving Week

Enjoying the cold? It was about 18 degrees as of 6 a.m. Monday morning. Even though it isn't officially winter, it sure feels like it.

Here's a glance at some of the key things worth knowing this week in Cranston.

Council
: The City Council meets tonight at 7 p.m. in City Hall council chambers. The agenda has a bit of action. Click here to poke through. I'll be at the meeting tonight offering play-by-play on Twitter as well as taking notes for stories to post throughout the week.

Cold, Rain, Cold: Speaking of the weather, the cold weather will continue through Monday with a high of just 34 degrees. But temperatures will increase on Tuesday through Wednesday as rain arrives. The high on Tuesday will be 40 and Wednesday's high will be a balmy 60 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. But temperatures plummet again with highs of just 35 and 34 for Thanksgiving day and Friday.

I guess this means you need your hat, scarf, winter jacket, umbrella, rain slicker, boots and a T-shirt to get through the week.

Blues and Bowling: Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. What to do? Here's an idea: go bowling and listen to some blues. That's what's on tap at Lang's Bowlarama. Hosted by the Midnites at the Skyline Lounge, all musicians are invited to come and jam out on stage from 7:30 to 11 p.m. No cover. Lang's is at 225 Niantic Ave.

Lockers: So the City Council on Monday could issue a vote authorizing the city to apply for a grant up to $400,000 for locker rooms to be built at Cranston Stadium. Read our story and comment whether it's a good idea. Remember, the city would have to match whatever grant money it gets with a 50 percent match.

Surplus: Budget season is a bit off, but there's still plenty to think about. That's why we checked in with Cranston Public Schools' Chief Financial Officer Joe Balducci to see how the district ended the last fiscal year. It turns out it ended with a healthy surplus. How much? Your guess is as good as mine.

Volunteering: As we approach Thanksgiving, now is a time to think about giving back. Cranston Patch is a great way to get the word out about volunteer opportunities and events that people can join to make our city a better place. So if you know of something, please contact me at mark.schieldrop@patch.com or give me a call at 401-515-3660.
