Monday Essentials: School Committee, Only in Rhode Island

What's happening in Cranston this week?

It's another week in Cranston and here's a few things worth knowing about. If you think I've missed something, or something should be added, feel free to send me an email at mark.schieldrop@patch.com.

School Committee: The School Committee meets Wednesday in the Briggs Building on Park Avenue. The agenda includes work sessions on the secondary tardy, personnel and waiver policies, proficiency based graduation requirements and some budget talk. The committee is also reviewing revisions to the personnel policy.

Only in Rhode Island: Sure, you say it while sipping an Awful Awful while driving by the Big Blue Bug on your way to Dunkin' Donuts after picking up your low number plates at the DMV. But did you know it's a film series going on at the Cranston Public Library? This week, enjoy the documentary Waterfire: Art and Soul of a City, a behind-the-scenese look at Waterfire Providence. After the screening, Executive Producer Joe Rocco will host a Q&A. Don't miss this one.

Strategic Plan: The School District's Strategic Plan is a Bible of sorts. It spells out the school system's mission and core values, along with outlining the system and procedures that make that vision a reality. The meeting is Thursday Oct. 21 at the Central Library at 7 p.m.

In one of Superintendent Judith Lundsten's letters to parents, she said the plan has been revised based on numerous meetings with students, teachers, parents and other members of the Cranston community since last fall. The plan is now being presented to the public for comments and questions. If you care about the future of your child's education, it might be a smart idea to attend.

Site Plan Meeting: Site plan review time. The committee is reviewing a potential use change for 2190 Broad Street. The owners are asking for a change of use from retail and services to restaurant. The current site is home to a McDonalds. The committee is also reviewing a request for an additional order sign at the McDonalds at 1099 Reservoir Ave. Agenda is here.

Flood Cancelled: If you were planning on attending the Flood Committee later this week, cancel your plans. The meeting has been scratched.

Wet, then cold: Early risers today were greeted by a band of strong rain thanks to the weather system that caused deadly tornadoes in the middle of the country moving through the area. Rain will continue Monday with warm temperatures in the 60s.

The rains will subside by tonight and it will start getting cold. We should have mostly clear skies for the remainder of the week with high temperatures pushing 40 degrees and nighttime lows will be in the 30s.

This all means your coat closet needs a jacket for all seasons this week.
