Obituary: R. Thomas Silva

R. Thomas Silva, 66, formerly of Aetna St., Cranston, passed away on Sunday May 6. Born in Providence, he was the beloved son of the late Thomas K. and Dorothy K. (Bennett) Silva.

66, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, formerly of Aetna St., Cranston, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2012.  Born in Providence, he was the beloved son of the late Thomas K. and Dorothy K. (Bennett) Silva. Mr. Silva spoke seven languages and was an educator for many years.  He was a magna cum laude graduate from Bishop Hendricken, graduated from Catholic University of Puerto Rico and received his Masters degree from the University of Rhode Island. He was the father of Lisa Silva-Gonzalez of Puerto Rico, David J. Silva of Seattle, Washington, Theresa M. Silva-Jorge of Middleburg, FL and Paul Silva of Mexico; grandfather of seven; and brother of Sharon T. Silva-Morgero of Cranston.  He is also survived by one niece, Racquel; one great-niece; and …

Alfred R. "Freddy" Spina, 83, of Johnston, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, May 7, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Evelyn (DePetrillo) Spina for 64 years.

Alfred R. "Freddy" Spina, 83, of Johnston, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, May 7, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Evelyn (DePetrillo) Spina for 64 years. The devoted husband, father, and grandfather was 83 years old. Known to many as “Freddy,” Alfred was the proprietor of Spina’s Shoes, which operated in downtown Providence for 47 years. To those closest to him, Alfred will be remembered as a man who loved nothing more than spending time with his family and friends, telling stories, making jokes, and talking about his life experiences. Born in Providence, Alfred was a son of the late Lorenzo and Filomena (Serra) Spina. He served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Korean War. …

Marion (Hazarian) Bramley, 87, of Cranston, passed away on Saturday May 6, 2012. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Palig (Setian) Hazarian.

Marion (Hazarian) Bramley, 87, of Cranston, passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2012. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Palig (Setian) Hazarian. Marion was the oldest daughter born to Armenian immigrants who fled persecution from the Armenian Genocide. Marion attended Mount Pleasant High School and as a young girl helped manage the family grocery store in Olneyville when her older brother was drafted in WW-II. She started her own family and resided in the Smith Hill section of Providence. Marion worked 30 years for the State of RI for the Department of Human Services. Marion danced the Halay and Tamzara with her beloved Anthony.  Holidays, birthdays, bazaars, dances all provided her the opportunity to be with …

Susie (Palazzo) Giusti, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Saturday May 5, 2012.  She was the beloved wife of the late Albert Giusti Sr. Born in West Warwick, she was the daughter of the late Pasco and Josephine (Pastore) Palazzo. Susie was employed by the State of RI General Hospitals for 20 years until retiring in 1997.  Previously she was employed by the former Giusti’s Café, West Warwick and the former Calart Flowers, Cranston. She was a member and volunteer of the West Warwick Senior Center and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church West Warwick. Susie lived life to the fullest and enjoyed spending time with her family and her best friend Lucille Corey. She was the loving mother of Ann Marie Simeone and her husband …

You can either sit at a School Committee meeting, a Zoning Board meeting or an Audit Committee meeting tonight. Or, you can listen to some Frank Sinatra.

It's a busy day in the city today. Here's a sampling of five of the more notable things going on in the city today: Zone: The Zoning Board is meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall. At the same time in City Hall, the Audit Committee will meet. Sinatra: 39 West is the place to be tonight for the smooth sounds of Frank Sinatra coming from Chris Jason and the Nightlife Orchestra. They'll be presenting "The Music of Sinatra" and are considered one of the best Sinatra tributes around. Council Picks Bucci, Former Councilwoman, to Fill Vacancy

The Cranston City Council appointed Maria A. Bucci, a councilwoman from 2004 to 2008, to fill the vacancy created after former Councilman Robert J. Pelletier's resigned earlier this month.

The City Council tonight voted 5-3 to appoint Maria A. Bucci, who served on the City Council from 2004 to 2008, to fill the vacant council seat left behind by Robert J. Pelletier, who resigned earlier this month after a residency flap. Deputy City Solicitor Evan Kirshenbaum advised the council to not make an appointment tonight. The City Council's lawyer, Patrick Quinlan, gave differing advice and said the council could make the appointment based on Pelletier's resignation, not the conclusion of his residency situation. When he submitted his letter of resignation, the council had every right to fill the appointment immediatley, Quinlan said.
