Angela - we have police beat from the past week-and-a-half due to be posted soon. Please note that we don't get every single incident or arrest report from CPD. Some things are held due to juveniles being involved or the incident is part of a larger investigation police don't want to make public right away. As far as what happened at the Price Rite, I can look into that. I don't know what …   more ›

Senator Wants to Move Harrington Hall

Sen. John Tassoni (D-Dist. 22) is calling upon the State Properties Commission to relocate Harrington Hall into the former Gloria McDonald women's prison in the Adult Correctional Institutions complex.

Citing deplorable conditions inside Harrington Hall, a homeless shelter for men, Sen. John Tassoni (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, North Smithfield) is advocating the shelter move into unoccupied space within the John O. Pastore Complex. Tassoni previously called for the shelter to move into the old training school but today, in an interview, said he now thinks the vacant former Gloria McDonald's women's facility is a "better fit." During a recent walkthrough, it was clear that the old training school isn't in the best shape and needs a lot of work construction-wise, Tassoni said. Harrington Hall, right now, "is a dump," Tassoni said. "It's disgusting. There's no privacy for the guys. There's only two bathrooms for 100 guys. Three showers for 100…

So... now sex offenders aren't allowed to be homeless? Um, where is the solution here? Literally forcing them onto the streets means they are impossible to track and removing all incentive for them to become productive members of society is promoting new sex crimes. 2 minute video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRNIitpy9po   more ›

Letter: Sex Offender Laws Ignore Future Victims

Shana Rowan responds to a letter to the editor recently by Suzanne Arena.

To the editor, Hopefully you have seen some of the comments that were posted beneath the letter to the editor entitled "Sex Offender Awareness Needs to Improve" by Suzanne Arena. I am one of the commenters and felt compelled to write a letter  in the hopes that it will be published and receive the same consideration and attention that Ms. Arena brought to the issue. Ms. Arena is right about one thing: awareness is important. Sexual assault of children and adults is absolutely something that not just Cranston, but the entire country needs to manage better. It's clear by the steady yearly increase of registered sex offenders - nearing 750,000 at the end of 2011 - that despite constant, stricter sex crime legislation, sex crimes continue at …

Letter: Sex Offender Awareness Needs to Improve

Suzanne Arena writes a letter to the editor.

I just got a breaking news story media alert "Police Searching for Bank Robber" last month! It is frustrating to know a WANTED Sex Offender Level III (worst level), is missing from Harrington Hall is not going to be put into a breaking news story anywhere.  As a member of Keep Cranston Safe, which was created by Tricia Gilmore, I have worked along with many others to be vigilant on keeping the allowed number of Homeless SEX OFFENDERS ("S.O.") down at Harrington Hall. There is a HUGE problem with this situation of Sex Offender Notification which we continually work on. Why just a month ago there was a Level III WANTED Sex Offender who was listed at Harrington Hall housing in Cranston and YOU never heard about it! Shocking to many of you (…

We need to realize that a "registry" is not going to do the job of parenting, educating or keeping anyone safe. Although parents can't be everywhere some need to be more engaged in their children's lives and guide them. Parents should seek out an educational program to teach children what is not appropriate as the "initiator" or the "recipient" of sexual situations. For example, there are many …   more ›
